CCAA Submission: Draft Code of Practice: Psychosocial hazards at work for fly-in fly-out workers in the resources and construction sectors
Cement Concrete & Aggregates Australia (CCAA) welcomes the opportunity to provide comments to the Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DEMIRS) on the Draft Code of Practice: Psychosocial hazards at work for fly-in fly-out workers in the resources and construction sectors.
CCAA is the peak body for the heavy construction materials industry in Australia. Our members operate cement manufacturing and distribution facilities, concrete batching plants, hard rock quarries and sand and gravel extraction operations throughout the nation. CCAA membership produce the majority of Australia's cement, concrete & aggregates, and ranges from large global companies to SMEs and family operated businesses.
CCAA supports the development of the Code of Practice and its emphasis on a systematic risk management process, including the identification, assessment, and control of psychosocial risks specific to FIFO work, such as isolation, long work hours, and accommodation conditions in remote areas.
CCAA also supports the Codes focus on leadership and workplace culture, consultation, co-operation, reporting and responding to psychosocial incidents, training and education.
CCAA recommends that DEMIRS, in consultation with the industry, develop a package of training and educational materials to support the release of the Code of Practice. These materials should be suitable for workers, supervisors, and managers, and should cover the key aspects of the Code of Practice. They should be made available free of charge to ensure all stakeholders in the Western Australian resources sector have equal access to this important resource.
Western Australia’s regulatory environment needs to be internationally competitive to continue to attract capital to invest into the state to ensure a safe, healthy, and sustainable heavy construction materials industry.
